Also called
Kritios Boy, this marble statue is
from the the Early Classical period
of ancient Greek art. The artist is
thought to be Kritios although the
evidence is not as strong as we
would like it to be. It is not
life-size as it is only 2 ft 10 ins
high. It's the earliest statue we
have that is realistic, fully nude,
and incorporates the natural,
relaxed, contrapposto stance. It is
possible that earlier statues
existed with all these attributes,
but no other surviving examples have
been found to date.
The statue was
excavated on the Acropolis where
Athenians buried the debris of
sacred artifacts destroyed by the
Persian army in 480 BC. The torso
was found in 1865 while the head was
found 23 years later.
